Abebe Hewiso is a 55-year-old farmer from Sidamo. He has been growing coffee for 20 years in the village of Boreta Weyo. He has 11 children, 3 hectares of plantations, and a favorite specialty variety that he processes using the dry method by hand, without rushing.
He submitted this coffee to the Cup of Excellence three times. It was only on his third attempt that he made it into the country's top 10 with 89.36 points out of 89.36. "This was the last time I was going to apply," Abebe says. "And I did everything to make it the best coffee of my life."
The Cup of Excellence is the most important coffee competition in the world. It is judged by international tasters, and the winning lots are bought directly at auctions. Getting in is like getting a "Michelin" star for a farmer's coffee.
The taste of this Ethiopian coffee is clear and intense, with a bright acidity. The flavor profile includes: raspberry, dried apricot, and yellow apple. It has a light body and a long, fruity aftertaste.
